Kevin’s POV On Global Digital Citizenship

Our kids are growing up on a digital playground and no one is on recess duty.  Kevin Clark-Dakar

The quote above sums up the lack of knowledge of digital citizenship. Classroom are global classroom but many don’t “teach” global digital citizenship. Many students are actually digital citizens and learn about the digital world by being a part of it.  Most of the issues kids have online with bullying, racism and inappropriate posting come from a lack of experience in the digital world.  Our goal is to start with kindergarten and begin to build the understanding that interactions online are interactions with real people and that posting something usually means it is online forever.  We hope is that by being part of the digital world in a controlled environment while they are young, they will have the knowledge and skills to be good digital citizens when they’re  on their own.

If you think about it the digital world is a very abstract concept, especially for young kids. I try very hard to bridge that abstract world by providing concrete connections with other classes around the world. We tweetSkype and use google docs to build relationships with digital tools. This years Social Media Week event  will have Compton High School be the first school to produce a global google hangout with a students from  New York to Hamburg and  have back to Los Angeles county.
