USC SILICON BEACH PROVIDES NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR COMPTON UNIFIED

By Kevin Clark

We want to thank our host, and new friend Jay Tucker, CMO & Head of Programs, Institute for Communication Technology Management (CTM) for inviting the Dakar Media Academy and our Partner, the Compton Unified School District to a powerful experience  that spawned several great connections for us.

The event brought a mix of Tech/Entertainment Leaders, coastal startups, and academic aspirants together in a day-long conference at the Ronald Tutor Center on the USC Campus.

As mentioned, Dakar met tech entrepreneurs–both local and global; legal advisers in the venture capital field; local political staffers; entertainment industry executives; and a student AmryRigby from the Iovine/Young Academy.

One of the highlights for Dakar was a conversation with Silicon Beach Festival Director and Digital LA Founder, Kevin Winston.  We discussed potential collaborations and mentorship with Kevin.

Dakar Media Academy, was represented by Director of Career Tech for Compton Unified School District, Ryan Whetstone who participated in the Q& A with one of the panelist.  Instructor Larry Hood also participated in Q & A during a morning session.

In the past few years Silicon Beach  has birthed regional offices for Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and YouTube  on the west side of Los Angeles.  Santa Monica south to Venice and Playa del Rey have become a hot spot for hundreds of startups including Hulu, Demand Media and Snapchat, which nixed a $3 billion takeover offer from Facebook.
